Frelimo received broad international support during the liberation struggle, but Tanzania was their greatest ally, and from 1962 the Front operated from bases in Dar es Salaam and near the border. Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere had developed a distinctive model of African socialism, based on the concept of Ujamaa, or familyhood, distinct from Machel’s more orthodox Marxist-Leninist approach. The two nations maintained good relations, as demonstrated in this image which shows Samora Machel (left) warmly embracing Nyerere, who was the first head of state to visit Mozambique following independence.
