One of Frelimo’s most pressing tasks from 1975 was to rebuild the economy, above all in agriculture. The 1977 Third Congress (referenced in this poster) defined priorities for the “long and difficult battle for the effective conquest of economic power”. Frelimo’s socialist policies stood and fell by their success in this area, ultimately failing, in large part due to the destruction of infrastructure by the opposition group Renamo and external opposition during the Sixteen Years War (1976-1992).
