Three-colour offset lithograph, DNPP, Maputo
Members of Frelimo’s army, the People’s Forces for the Liberation of Mozambique (FPLM), hold aloft a hammer and enxada (African hoe) as well as their guns. The principle that militants should engage in production as well as defending the homeland was established in the Liberated Zones during the Armed Struggle. In 1979, Mozambique’s principal enemies were the white-separatist régimes of Ian Smith’s Rhodesia and apartheid South Africa.
